But all it takes is a mask, snorkle and the willingness to get wet, and a whole new world comes to view. Youve heard of birdwatching, well were about to go fish watching with underwater photographer Dr. Bill Roston. To start out with, to get a mask that fits, you should be able to take your mask, do not put the strap on it, and stick it to your face and inhale through your nose. VO- Before we take the plunge we need to go over some snorkeling basics. Bill- Can all of you do that? Can all of you suck it against your face without air coming through it? If youve got a mask that leaks too much air, its going to leak water. Lets lay down and check and make sure we dont have any leakages before we get out there. Ok, stick your head underwater, inhale. VO- As soon as I got my face under the water, I realized just how different this adventure was going to be. Just a bit of glass in front of my face ...

Once you have your equipment, the best way to begin is to start taking pictures. Be sure to stock up on lots of film and take some shots of each subject. This way you can assess shots and learn from your own underwater photography mistakes. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Get close to your subject. One conjecture why underwater photography is so fascinating is that matter is suspended in the water in the middle of you and your subject. The flash reflects off of this material resulting in blurry, obstructed pictures.

Start photographing small objects first. This will allow you to preset your tool before you dive. Use a flashgun to furnish white light as monochromatic blue light is the only light that penetrates deeper water. Synthetic white light is vital in underwater photography for producing sharp, colorful images.

Position your flashgun correctly. Your flashgun should be positioned a good distance from the lens axis to avoid reflection of light off of suspended matter otherwise called back scatter.

After you get a feel for underwater photography, you will find that you can literally learn as you go. Take lots of film as this is the cheapest component of underwater photography. assess shots, learn from your mistakes, and you will soon be wowing your friends and family with more than stories. You'll have the photos to back them up.

Scuba Diving - How to Get Started In Underwater PhotographyScuba Slideshow of Roatan and Cozumel Tube. Duration : 4.02 Mins.

This was originally created as a Christmas present for my father in 2011. I shot all of the video and my dad took all of the pictures. Me and him both scuba dive a lot together and most of the time I'm the videographer and he's the photographer. We got the footage and photos when we took our cruise ship trip to Cozumel and Roatan. Both awesome places! I'm happy the way it turned out. Merry Christmas, dad!
